Ana de Armas and Keanu Reeves first appeared in the psychological thriller, Knock Knock, over a decade ago. Always a fan of de Armas, Reeves returned for the film where de Armas stars as Eve Macarro, a ballet-dancing assassin hunting down her father’s murderers, in the John Wick spin-off, Ballerina. Taking place between John Wick: Chapter 3 – Parabellum and Chapter 4, Ballerina explores the mysterious world of Ruska Roma in the Wick franchise.

De Armas’s journey to Ballerina has been marked by drive and tenacity. Since leaving Cuba during her youth, the actress has been on a meteoric rise after captivating audiences in Knives Out and No Time to Die. Maison has continued to demonstrate versatility with this new role. Both de Armas and the film explore the complexity of typifying grace and killing without losing her flow.

Director Len Wiseman and producer Chad Stahelski, who oddly both have similarly named collaboration credits for the John Wick universe, noted de Armas could play a leading action star role noting how incredible committing to an physically demanding role it is. De Armas’s total transformation into an action star was noted by both Wiseman and Stahelski.

As John Wick, Keanu Reeves returns a recognizable connection to curve, and he and de Armas relied on history having now known each other throughout the years. The two actors have a unique rapport and relationship that can be easily felt onscreen and easily builds the backstory of their characters.

Reeves has said he is impressed by de Armas’ performance, her taking the role seriously, and that she brings a new energy to the franchise.

Ballerina features Anjelica Huston, Ian McShane, and Lance Reddick, which adds to the story as familiar faces. While the choreography and action sequences have been well praised for their visual exuberance, some critics have also noted that the film’s plot uses a heavy stylization of violence at the cost of truly meaningfully building characters in a substantive level.

As Ballerina takes to the theaters, it provides audiences with elegance and action with de Armas leading the enhancements of the Ido franchise. Her rise to becoming an A-list action heroine hence arguably makes the film’s theme transformation through perseverance, quite fitting.
