Guess who just dropped a nuke in the digital fashion space: BLACKPINK, the world’s reigning K-pop queens, who are going harder than ever with a metaverse-centric style collection!
Sources say YG Entertainment and London’s Karta studio are working with metaverse platforms such as Zepeto and Roblox to bring fans a digital haute couture collection based on the iconography of Jisoo, Jennie, Rosé, and Lisa.
Expect next-gen streetwear, cyber-gothic elegance, and virtual outfits inspired by their sumptuous red carpet looks—all available for fans to dress their avatars.
The launch is set to bring debut styles to Blackpink: The Palace in Roblox on August 25. Fans—Blinks—can take selfies with the avatars, dress in virtual versions of their favourite stage outfits, smash crystals with the lightstick-shaped hammer linked to their physical versions to get exclusive outfits, and earn limited badges and digital swag.
The rumour mill is already starting to churn: words are that Zepeto will have even more stylised avatars and fashion collaborations later this year. BLACKPINK had previously appeared as 3D models there back in 2020. Now, they’re doubling down, creating a rich digital wardrobe.
Is designer couture’s turn coming up? Luxury labels like Gucci, Dior, Ralph Lauren, and others (whether they want to admit it or not) are already providing artfully crafted digital fashion avatars in their value propositions on application forms like Zepeto. BLACKPINK’s line could catalyse its adoption through Asia, and beyond. As analysts have pointed out, it can leverage their fandom, build uneasiness because of loot-box mechanics, and blend entertainment and digital forward fashion contextualizations.
For Blinks everywhere, it is a perfect opportunity to wear BLACKPINK’s act of catapulting avatars to the digital stage via live virtual fashion spectacles, avatar transformations, and digital flash mobs and dance-offs. As one rabid Reddit fan noted:
“You can style your black pink costume on your fake avatar and sync with BLACKPINK viber-rants on stage in 360 degrees of glory.”
There is heightened excitement, and it is no surprise; it is a full-blown metaverse fashion conglomerate run by one of the biggest-selling (girl) K-pop groups of all time. Not to mention the use of avatars, badges, or blockchain-ready collectables. Let it be noted one more time that BLACKPINK is showing that owning the stage does not come with fear of virtual-only ownership.
So hang on tight – we might just be seeing the very first fashion wave!
Hop on your metaverse, grab your lightstick hammer, teleport in, and let your avatars slay!
