Charlize Theron criticized the extravagant $50 million wedding of Jeff Bezos and Lauren Sánchez.

Actress Charlize Theron has slammed Jeff Bezos and his new bride, Lauren Sánchez Bezos, for throwing a star-studded $50 million wedding in Venice, Italy, at her annual charity event in Los Angeles.

While hosting the entertainment portion of her annual charity event, the Old Guard actress drew much attention after joking about the couple’s lovely wedding in Italy.

This garnered considerable media attention over the weekend, and apparently, she wasn’t invited.

While talking onstage at the 5th annual Block Party for the Charlize Theron Africa Outreach Project (CTAOP), Theron said, “I think we might be the only people who did not get an invite to the Bezos wedding. But that’s OK because they s**k and we’re cool.”

The event, intended to contribute to the health and safety of youth initiatives in South Africa, took a serious turn when Theron spoke about the state of the world. “Especially when the world feels like it’s burning because it is, we are going backwards quickly in Los Angeles, in the US, and throughout the world,” she stated.

The “Old Guard” star, thanking her guests for “taking the time to be a part of this”, specifically because “the world feels like it’s burning and it is”. “As we move further and faster backwards in Los Angeles, in the US, and around the world,” she went on.

“Yah, f–ck them,” she said.

She went on to criticize immigration policies, the rollbacks of women’s rights, violence based on gender, and the erasure of queer and trans lives.

The celebrations were met with backlash both on the internet and on the streets of Venice, with protestors denouncing the billionaire for their wealth and taxes in the face of growing wealth inequality.

While celebrity culture often has a focus on glamor, Theron was able to shift that narrative and change the tone of a conversation. She used her public platform to shift the attention away from the indulgence of billionaires to consider humanitarian issues that matter, making the point that top-notch aesthetics mean nothing while authentic suffering continues.

It didn’t take long for comparisons of Bezos’s flair for excess vs. MacKenzie Scott’s generosity to emerge; while Bezos splurged, Scott, as of late 2024, had given away more than 19 billion dollars to charitable organizations.
