Los Angeles, June 2025 – In a scathing critique that’s shaken Tinseltown, Hollywood giant Dakota Johnson has labeled the movie industry a “f‑ing bleak” wasteland, blaming studios for stagnation and complacency by constantly “remaking the same things.”
Speaking bluntly to L’Officiel, 35-year-old actress and independent producer cautioned that Hollywood—particularly streaming behemoths like Netflix and Amazon—is currently powered by algorithms and fear, opting for the sure thing instead of new voices. “Decision-makers are afraid,” she fulminated. “They want to make the safe choice, and the safe choice is actually dull.”
Johnson has earned a reputation for her boldness, frequently gravitating toward quirky, well-made indies such as Daddio—a film she coproduced that featured Sean Penn and Daisy Ridley. Remembering the arduous process of selling it in Telluride, she stated, “It took a lot of fighting to get that made,” something she credits to Hollywood’s paralyzing risk-aversion.
She also grumbled sadly about her experience working on Madame Web, Sony’s doomed Marvel spinoff. Given a role she didn’t completely grasp, Johnson found the experience “absolutely psychotic” and reported that the project was immediately “ripped to shreds” by reviewers. Her takeaway? Big-budget blockbusters are frequently committee-created cookie-cutter versions of previous films. Art, she emphasized, “does not do well when it’s made by committee.”
In a hard-hitting tone, Johnson cautioned: “It feels like nobody knows what to do and everyone’s afraid.” She made a scathing critique of streaming platforms that now drive choice away from artists, by data-driven imperative instead of visionary artistry—and intimated the industry is in danger of collapsing in on itself through indecision and lack of taste.
Her words lead to one of the most biting comebacks from an A-list celebrity in recent history. Johnson—who also founded the female-owned production company TeaTime Pictures—is taking her stand to call for a revolution in how stories are selected and funded.
Her declaration comes across as box-office weariness is dandy—some movie giants crank out constant sequels (some of them even in the spy and superhero genre), while cinemas and streaming screens feature more and more a procession of franchise reruns and reboots. Johnson defies the norm, calling studios to be willing to risk on new narratives and innovative risk-takers.
Hollywood has taken her warning to heart. The question now is: will her outcry bring about actual change, or be another footnote in the cycle of complaint—and complacency—that Dakota Johnson courageously will not abide?
