A Norwegian man woke up to find a titanic-sized surprise in his garden. Imagine waking up, stretching, and thinking, “Did someone park a 440-foot cargo ship on my lawn?” For Johan Helberg of Byneset, near Trondheim, Norway, this wasn’t a dream—it was his Thursday morning reality.
At around 5:00 a.m., the NCL Salten, a 135-meter container ship, decided to take an unscheduled detour, running aground just meters from Helberg’s home. The vessel, en route to Orkanger, failed to navigate the Trondheim fjord correctly, leading to this unexpected backyard docking.
Helberg, a sound sleeper, remained blissfully unaware of the maritime mishap until his neighbor, Jostein Jørgensen, rang his doorbell to alert him. Stepping outside, Helberg was met with the surreal sight of the ship’s bow looming just five meters from his bedroom window. “It was so unreal,” he remarked, adding that the ship had become a “very bulky new neighbor.”
The ship, owned by Lithuanian company Baltnautic and crewed by Russians and Ukrainians, had 16 people onboard at the time. Fortunately, no injuries or environmental damage were reported. Investigations are underway to determine the cause of the grounding, with initial reports suggesting the helmsman may have fallen asleep at the wheel.
Efforts to refloat the ship with a tugboat have so far been unsuccessful, and the Norwegian Coastal Administration is conducting geotechnical assessments to determine the next steps for salvage.
In the meantime, Helberg’s garden remains the temporary resting place for the NCL Salten—a testament to the unpredictable nature of maritime navigation and the importance of staying alert at the helm.
This shocking incident can either make you go bananas or become your worst nightmare. He added that there was currently no suspicion of anyone being under the influence of drugs or alcohol. Keep Reading OhGoss.com for more news.
